The JA resort was our first experience of Dubai and it surprised us in many ways. The resort is situated about 45 minutes drive from the main Airport. It comprises a number of hotels, a golf course and several other amazing features - gym, squash, badminton, tennis, shooting, golf, water sports etc etc. You name it, you can get it without leaving the complex. I had a haircut in the spa and have had some excellent wake-surfing tuition behind a beautiful wake boat on the clean flat water. The good: Loads to do. The grounds and beach are immaculate - clean and manicured. The hotels and rooms and washrooms are spotless. The staff are wonderful, friendly and obliging. A massive 5 stars to the groundskeepers and cleaners. The bad: The food in the restaurants is mediocre at best and can be pretty awful at times. The Açai bowl at breakfast was something else - a bowl of jam covered in banana slices and some granola! The 8 hour cooked lamb with rice was pretty shocking - almost zero taste. Service can be very slow so plan meals well ahead if you have other activities booked. The restaurants get booked well in advance by the ‘regulars’. We tried booking on day 2 of our week and most restaurants were pretty full so we had to take whatever times were available. The music in all of the restaurants and bars in the evenings is electronic drum machine stuff that would go well in an Ibiza night club. The huge number of young kids seem to enjoy it judging by the screams of delight. Not very relaxing and most restaurants and bars are lacking much in atmosphere and charm. The sports bar by the gym has all the character of a bus station. The Italian restaurant Sette was echoey and noisy and not great as a dining experience. The one place that actually feels like an adult bar is, unsurprisingly, the adults only bar, Bibé which is on the top floor of the new hotel, Lake View. If you want a chilled night then this will be your first choice. The all-inclusive package is far from all inclusive and we regularly were told that all inclusive was restricted to certain times, drinks, food choices or subject to a supplement. For example stand up paddle boards are only all-inclusive between 10 and 12 or 1 and 3. Which just seems odd as nobody was on them at other times as far as we could see. Smoothies are not included. Most beers are excluded, I think there’s a choice of Draft Amstel and one other. My usual tipple , an Irish whisky and ginger ale or a dry martini weren’t included so I ended up paying for most nearly all of my drinks. As a family holiday or if you really love kids it would work. As a couples getaway it’s not recommended. Given food quality we regretted buying the all inclusive. A great place to lose weight! Read more
The resort is lovely but the service is very poor. Firstly we arrived to a disorganised valet and unhelpful reception. We unloaded our bags onto the path (with babies) and had not even a greeting let alone assistance. We arrived 10 minutes before the check-in time and room wasn’t ready so with little information we decided to grab food only to come back over an hour later and find our luggage still on the path outside. The manager loosely apologised. Following that we waited nearly an hour both nights for room service to deliver a glass of milk for our baby to be told countless times it was on its way. Long queues at the bar with no pool side service and staff were stressed. Their approach to their service mentality is clearly based on their all inclusive model, so it’s really lacking. So maybe don’t pay as you go and you’ll feel more content than we did. Read more
The resort is 30 minutes distant from downtown. The rooms are regularly cleaned and at 5 stars level. The staff is friendly and professional. The White Orchid restaurant offers a nice menu. Nice beach and clean pools. This hotel is highly recommended for families. Price level of extras is fair. Read more

We wanted a fully all inclusive week away and paid for the ultra all inclusive deal, which we were told included everything. The signature (special) restaurants allowed us to have quite a bit of choice but any item marked with an image of a chefs hat were an extra charge, although with a 50% discount for all inclusive guests. Most drinks were also not included. We checked with the staff and they were clear, it was just the way that the ultra inclusive deal as advertised does not make things quite so clear. We spoke to some returning guests and they told us that over the years, there are many items now that are excluded from the ultra all inclusive deal that used to be included for the same cost. The view from the beach is not great, to the left and in front is an unfinished road system on a new palm, with just the stilts showing, to the right is a new port being built with masses of construction cranes being used. A new palm was being built and is only very partly built before they had a change of mind...... The staff were excellent though and special thanks should go to Thiri (White Orchid plus the buffet restaurant at Palm Tree Court) and Sam (Palm Tree Court poolside bar), who were both superb and very friendly. Please pass on our thanks to them.Read more
