The ambiance is world class. The staff is second to none. The food is above average. Some of the dishes are overly glorified and risks being borderline pretentious. Peranakan families know that nyonya food comes from the heart and should taste like a mother’s kitchen. I guess the flavours are there but not elevated enough for the price. Actually I don’t want it to be elevated. Nyonya food shouldn’t be pretentious. Especially the Chap Chye which is a celebratory vegetable stew that costs way too much for its tiny serving. Tok Panjang should look generous and abundant, I hope the servings will improve to a more decent amount.Read more
Wonderful colonial venue with great service and food. We had been recommended to the National Kitchen by a Singaporean friend who had not been here but heard good things. We were pleased we got a table. We called on Weds for a booking later in the week and they were fully booked but fitted us in that night. We arrived on time but the table was not ready and they gave us complimentary glasses of wine on the terrace whilst we waited (great view of the Pedang). We started with Coronation Chicken tarts which were wonderful and then moved onto Beef Cheek with vegetables and rice. All the food tasted great - presentation of the main courses less special somehow. Nice bottle of Malbec tho expensive as one would expect here. Service very attentive and faultless. Restaurant environment is gorgeous Read more
We had to wait for a table but it was well worth the wait. Our server was very helpful as many of the dishes were completely unfamiliar to us. We ordered a selection of appetisers and mains which were served family style for us to try and to share. The Beef Rendang was the star of the show. Mouthwateringly good. Worth going just to sit in the beautiful interior of the restaurant.Read more
Having had dinner at Violet Oon previously and had a great experience in every way, I decided to go again and had an even better experience as we tried different foods on the menu. It is a must go, from the entry into the building, it is a unique experience walking thru the gallery and then welcomed at the door at Violet Oon. A must go.Read more
Very good food indeed in a gleaming glass cutlery mahogany and tiled dining room inside the National Gallery (just finding it is quite a fun experience when the gallery itself is closed - has a feel of ‘Nights at the Museum’). Serious cooking with a contemporary twist to some traditional dishes. Informative and helpful waiters willing to guide you if you’re not very well informed about individual dishes. Good choice of non-alcoholic drinks including a fiery home made ginger beer. Just beware that last orders is at 9.30 so if you have a table for 8.30 you may find ordering dessert is a bit of a gallop and therefore not a particularly relaxing end to the meal. Very reasonably priced for this quality food and setting.Read more
