My husband and I had a weekend getaway in Abu Dhabi and chose to stay at the Intercontinental. As we always do, I get my husband's ID and check us in while he ensures our car gets parked and our luggage is gotten out the car.
As I approached the front desk, I was "welcomed" with two of the front-desk receptionists tugging on each other, laughing, and playing. At first, they were both chatting and walking; when they saw me approaching the desk to check in is when their horseplaying began. It was so obvious that neither wanted to check us in. After pulling, tugging, laughing, and twirling each other around for about a minute, Shering came to check me in; the other lady jogged to the back laughing out loud.
It was obvious that Shering did not want to be bothered checking me in, so her attitude was not welcoming at all! Plus she coughed without covering her unmasked mouth or turning her head several times while checking us in. Then she offered us to buy breakfast, which we'd already paid for with our reservation. We declined breakfast because I thought we'd gotten it already. Plus there was so much laughter and raucous coming from the office behind the receptionist desk, paired with Shering talking softly, it was difficult to understand what she was saying.
Once we got to the room, I pulled up our reservation online which clearly stated breakfast was included. So, we went back to the receptionist desk to show our reservation. Shering asked us to email it and asked to see the reservation. We obliged. Then she called someone - I'm guessing a manager - and walked him/her through finding the email and the part where it stated breakfast was included. After about 5 minutes and no resolution, we said we'd go back up to our room and asked her to call us when the issue was settled. We never got a phone call, but my husband called and was told that we could get breakfast. RIghtfully so; we had paid for it with our reservation.
We have stayed at many IHG hotels in the UAE and the USA and have never had such an awful check-in experience. I was embarrassed and thankful no other customers were in the lobby. I was embarrassed because Shering and her playmate made me feel unwelcomed; their unprofessional behavior taunted me.
Solomon and Shiju were extremely friendly, welcoming, and professional. They helped us with valet and our luggage and got a taxi for us whenever we needed one.
Nickson in housekeeping and Jacob in the dining room were also very friendly, helpful, and professional.
Breakfast had a vast array of food and beverages. There's plenty of seating in breakfast, but I advise getting there early. The first day we were there, 5 - 10 children were running and playing in the dining room the entire time we were trying to enjoy breakfast.
From our window, we could see the Atlantis and the Marina, which are lit up beautifully at night.
It's obvious that this hotel is older. However, the room was very clean.
There are several restaurants in and around this hotel. There's a pool and gym near the hotel and another one opposite the rooms within a short walking distance. You can purchase water sports or just chill out on the private beach for a day of total relaxation! The grounds are absolutely beautifully serene!
It's in a very calm, quiet, peaceful area of Abu Dhabi. However, there's plenty to do nearby. The Emirates Palace, several malls, and Corniche are a very short drive away.More
